“LTCC fabrication requires special Gerber software tooling to
generate the via hole punches, stencils for via hole metal fill and
conductor expansion for metal printing. Present day PCB design
software allows for some of the special needs of LTCC fabrication,
but manufacturing of LTCC substrates have special artwork
requirements that standard PCB Design tools do not support when
generating the Gerber tools.
Our present
process required many man-hours of our layout designers in
generating these Gerber tools in order fabricate the individual
layers of the green ceramic with silkscreen printed conductor
metals. A standard job would require at least 1 week (8 hr shift) of
layout designers time, and as much as two weeks of time for any
designs exceeding 24 layers of tape, in order to create the needed
stencil photo-tools, conductor photo-tools, NC punch files, and
cavity cutout punch files. This excessive time was too much of a
burden on our product flow and better tooling was needed to remain
competitive.
CAD DESIGN SOFTWARE has significantly improved their Gerber tool and
specially altered its capability to address the special needs of
LTCC fabrication. The introduction of layer scaling, layer
mirroring, layer rotation, and design step-and-repeat has exceeded
expectations. A special nibbler tool has allowed us to create
complex cavity punches without many man-hours invested to physically
route the punches from the Gerber tool to create the cavity shape.
The special LTCC design and Gerber package that CDS has designed for
LTCC has essentially allowed us to reduce our tooling generation
time for complex ceramic designs from 40-80 hrs to 2-8 hrs. This is
a significant savings in cost, production flow and quality of our
LTCC products.”
